When roots start cracking paving, lifting pathways or invading garden beds, the urge to reach for the pruning gear is understandable. If you reduce what’s happening above ground, surely something changes below it… right? It’s a reasonable assumption, but pruning and root growth are not as directly connected as most people expect and understanding why can save a lot of time and frustration.
A tree is a connected system and the canopy produces energy through photosynthesis, while the roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Each depends on the other, and both are constantly working to keep the tree alive and growing.
When branches are removed, the tree experiences a temporary reduction in foliage, but the roots don’t simply stop. Established root systems continue performing their essential functions regardless of what happens in the canopy. Trees are resilient, and in many cases they respond to pruning by redirecting energy toward new growth and recovery. The root system often carries on much as it did before. Pruning is a canopy management tool, and not a mechanism for controlling root expansion.
Root behaviour is shaped by environmental and biological factors that have little to do with branch structure. Moisture is one of the most powerful drivers as roots naturally move toward reliable water sources, which is why leaking pipes, irrigation systems and stormwater drains are so frequently targeted.
Soil conditions matter too as looser, healthy soil encourages roots to spread freely, whilst compacted ground can push them to seek resources elsewhere. Nutrient availability, drainage, and soil temperature all influence the direction and rate of growth.
Species is another major factor because some trees (such as large shade trees, certain gums and figs) are simply predisposed to developing extensive root systems that can travel significant distances. When root problems occur, the cause is usually found in the surrounding environment, not in the canopy above.
Some property owners opt for aggressive pruning in the hope of slowing root activity although in actuality this approach can backfire. Over pruning stresses a tree and reduces its capacity to produce energy through photosynthesis. A stressed tree activates survival responses and in difficult environmental conditions, this can mean the tree devotes more resources and not fewer to seeking out water and nutrients underground. Heavy pruning may actually drive further root development rather than reduce it.
There are structural consequences too as large pruning cuts take longer to heal and increase the risk of decay entering the tree. Excessive canopy reduction can leave a tree weakened and more vulnerable to pests and disease. Using it as a workaround for root problems is unlikely to deliver the outcome you’re looking for.
When roots are causing damage, a targeted response will always be more effective than canopy work alone. The right approach depends on the species, the severity of the issue and where the tree sits in relation to structures or services. Root barriers can redirect future growth away from paving, pipes and garden beds. Addressing drainage issues or repairing leaking pipes removes the moisture sources drawing roots in. Where damage has already occurred, specialised root management techniques may be required.
For mature trees, an arboricultural assessment gives a clear picture of the root system’s extent and the risks involved. In some cases, targeted management is sufficient while in others complete removal of the tree is the more practical and cost effective outcome, particularly where ongoing damage to structures or underground services is likely.
Getting professional advice early keeps options open. The longer root issues go unaddressed, the more limited and expensive the solutions tend to become.
